What is Ringworm?

Ringworm or Tinea is a skin infection that spreads very fast from person to person and it can be seen very commonly among children. This infection can happen from contact with another person having the virus and the worse part of it is that it can also be transmitted in its dormant state. Therefore, finding out where did you get ringworm at the first place can be very confusing.

You can also get ringworm from your pets. Dogs and cats carry these diseases and they can be transmitted to humans easily. This virus is more common among sheep and cattle.

It is very easy to get an infection like ringworm when you are a sports person, and people who wrestle are considered to be the highest at risk. It is therefore very important for sports people to take proper measures while using the locker rooms and while having a bath in the swimming pools that may be contaminated with these kinds of viruses.

There are many skin infections that come under this category and you hear about them regularly. They can include jock itch which is very common among wrestlers and joggers and which manifests itself in the groin area, and then there is the athlete’s foot which is related to infections of the skin in the area of the feet.

Ringworm is easily spotted, as it affects any area of the body and it does not actually attack a particular place. It creates an itchy sensation and it forms a red mark in the skin. As the infection develops it affects the skin in form of inflammation leaving ringworm like mark and that is where it derives its name from.

Diagnosis of ringworm is not very difficult and your doctor should be able to let you know immediately on inspection whether what you are having is ringworm or something else.

Ringworm is easily curable with medications. Medicines like Miconazole or Terbinafine can be applied on the affected area twice a day for about 15 days or until the symptoms prevail. It is however important to contact your doctor if you feel that this problem is not getting any better with these creams as perhaps you will require stronger treatment or oral medications to handle the virus properly.

There are no side effects of this disease and it is a curable yet disturbing infection that you should try to avoid with proper hygiene and understanding of its symptoms and prevention measures.

Symptoms and Treatment of Yaws disease

Yaws is a tropical skin condition caused by bacteria called spirochete. This infection can also affect your bones and joints and it is very contagious. Yaws can easily spread through touch with a person that is already suffering from this infection and it can penetrate the body via any simple cut or laceration.

Yaws infection will itself within one month of entry into the system and it is characterized like an ulcerous mass that forms in the skin in an specific area. The color of the ulcer is dark red and if this condition is not treated, then within eight to ten weeks you will be having more smaller ulcer like infections spreading around the whole area. These ulcers can combine together to form a bigger and thick plaque.

Yaws disease is normally seen to attack the area of the feet and once it reaches its second stage this disease is irreversible and people will have to cope with the infection for the rest of their lives. Once the disease begins to grow, it will start to attack the bones of the patient as well. This depends very much on the stage of the disorder and if you have had proper medications for this, normally the symptoms go away within six months and they don’t come back.

However, if untreated, Yaws disease can led to further problems in the area that it is spreading, causing bone deformations and other problems. Treatment at this stage is more severe and the patient will be having other problems as well.

This disease is very common in children from the age of five to twelve in Latin American countries, the Caribbean Islands, India and Southeast Asia. The World Health Organization has been working on creating an awareness of the disease since the 1960’s and it has funded research to find the best possible cure for Yaws infection. However, it is unclear as to how many people in the world are actually infected with this disease at the moment.

At present, the most common treatment for Yaws infections is the use of penicillin, erythromycin of tetracycline injections. Once the disease has been diagnosed in its early stages, treatment will allow the patient to become free from this infection as it is very rare that the infection will relapse on its own. Awareness and understanding of the infection is therefore the best treatment for yaws disease.

What is Typhus fever?

Typhus is a disease caused by bacteria called Rickettsiae. This is a kind of fever which is sometimes confused with dengue fever because of its similar symptoms of fever and headaches. There are three types of typhus fevers which are most common. One is considered to be the epidemic typhus which happens after a war or a natural disaster, where the conditions for these kinds of bacteria become very favorable and people get affected by this disease by the masses. The symptoms will include fever, headaches, chills, and skins rashes. This condition is also known as ship fever or prison fever because the way it affects the masses.

Another type of typhus is the scrub typhus of chigger-borne, which is transmitted by chiggers in heavily vegetated tropical areas. The symptoms of this type of typhus are muscular pain, fever, cough and digestive problems as well.

The third most common type of typhus is called Endemic typhus or flea borne typhus which gets transmitted from rats that are infected with fleas that are carrying the disease. The symptoms of endemic typhus include joint pains, headache, chills, nausea, fever, vomiting and cough.

There are many diseases related to the same bacteria, however they do not give the same symptoms and typhus is a very serious disease especially if it is due to a epidemic. In this case the use of antibiotics and medicines like doxycycline or tetracycline should be administered to the patient at the earliest to avoid further complications.

During the World War I typhus caused approximately three million deaths in Russia and other European countries. However, at present, although there are so many facilities to take care of these kinds of diseases, typhus is still responsible for about 2000 deaths every year all over the world. This is highest in the developing countries and especially in those countries where medical facilities are still very far behind in their ways of functioning.

This disease although similar in name to typhoid does not have to do anything with it at all and it should not be confused.

What is Gynecomastia?

Gynecomastia is a condition where men get tissue growth in their breast and this makes them appear as if they have women’s breast. These tissues are tender and sensitive. The literal meaning of the word Gynecomastia is women’s breasts. This is something common among growing boys and once the boy reaches its puberty then the symptoms disappears in about 90 percent of the cases.

However, for those 10 percent that have to live with this very discomforting problem, it can not only cause physical problems but it is also a matter of psychological concern for them. People will be ashamed of this condition and at the same time this can be a cause for teasing and humiliation in the long run.

Other than the fact that people will be ashamed of the condition, there is no evidence of this problem creating any physical difficulties in any manner. There is another disorder very similar to this one and is called pseudogynecomastia which is considered to be a fatty builds up in the chest, however they are not the same.

Also, another factor very interesting about this disorder is that gynecomastia can affect only one side of your breasts, or both. There are a few reasons that are believed to cause this disorder and they include steroid abuse, obesity, genetic disorders and chronic liver diseases. Also, this can be due to side effects of some medications; however, there is no proof of this specifically. Of course, it has also been studied that men that are having hormonal imbalance problems also can develop gynecomastia at later stages of their lives.

Your doctor should be able to diagnose gynecomastia very easily, and although this is not a dangerous disease, getting yourself checked up in case you see this kind of growth may be a good idea. Also, breast cancer is not something very common among men; however, the tissues formed in the men’s breasts due to gynecomastia are usually not cancerous.

If for some reason your doctor feels that there are other symptoms that are not fitting in with those of this disorder, he will then get the proper tests done to rule out any unwanted problems.

Gynecomastia is not a disorder that really needs any kind of treatment and it normally goes away after some time. However, this also depends on the reasons for the disorder to have appeared in the first place. If this is the side effect of some drug that you are taking the doctor will perhaps look into the problem and give you alternative medicines that will change the course of events and your breast will come back to its normal size eventually.

If the reason for gynecomastia is obesity, then following a regular diet and fitness program will give you very good results in no time. However, if for some reason the problem is to high and it is creating an imbalance in your social and emotional life, doctors may prescribe that you get a surgery done and get the extra tissue removed surgically. However, this is not considered to be a difficult operation.

How to avoid varicose veins

Varicose Veins is a painful and disturbing condition where the veins get enlarged because of too much pressure on the veins from the blood. This condition is very common in women and in the US alone, about half of the population gets this problem to certain extent.  On its initial stages, this is not a painful condition and people handle the situation without any kind of medication, however, it is uncomfortable to see, and therefore women prefer to cover their legs as much as possible.

Varicose veins is not a serious condition, however, it is common with obese women in their late 30th and early 40ths. Also, it is common for some women to have varicose veins problems at the time of pregnancy because of the pressure on the lower limbs. The blood flow on the legs slows down and therefore the veins become enlarged. Once this becomes a chronic problem then you can have serious problems as you can develop severe pain as well.

However, the biggest risk of having varicose veins is the clotting of the blood. If this happens you are putting yourself at risk of having those clots travel to the heart or the brain and that can become a very dangerous situation.

Another reason that has been found for getting varicose veins is exposure to the sun. And it is also been found that this exposure creates varicose veins in the area of the face.

Varicose veins can also be a disorder passed on by generations in your family. Normally people with family history of this disease will also get it themselves. However this is not something that you need to have if you take some precautions early on life to keep yourself healthy and fit all the time.

Try not to get too much weight on yourself during pregnancy. There is a lot of research going on, on the effects of obesity during pregnancy and they are very disturbing for you and for your child as well. This will help with any varicose veins condition. Also, try to get rid of the extra fat that you accumulated at the time of pregnancy at the earliest possible. This is easy said than done; however, it is not impossible.

Use sun screen to keep your skin and body protected from the sunlight at all times. This is something that will keep you looking younger all over and that includes your beautiful legs.

Develop a healthy lifestyle with a good nutritious diet program and exercise regularly to make sure that your blood is flowing freely and that you are fit and fine all the time.
